Cold War Kids= BRILLIANCE!

In the Cold War Kids’ newest album, Loyalty to Loyalty, the Kids utilize an interesting mix of dark images and construct notions of loss and confusion. It is, to say the least, really really awesome.

Their neo-jazz/rock embodies everything that is great about modern music. It is the fusion that our society can’t live without. It’s the stuff that you can listen to walking aroung on your iPod, in a dark underground bar, while stoned, or just chilling in your room.

In “Dreams Old Men Dream,” Nathan tells us to “meet the media black sky” and it is probably my favorite line in the whole album.

“Mexican Dogs” is another great tune where Nathan’s belts really take you away along with Jonnie mad crazy good strums.

There is just so much wonderful wonderfulness I can’t keep writing I must go listen more so maybe there’ll be a follow up or maybe I’ll have something else to write about, we’ll see.

Here’s the first music video from the album to tide you over.

My class today was watching Singin’ in the Rain. How sick is that??? It was the most amazing expirience ever. It’s defnitley one of the greatest movies ever because it’s fun for fun’s sake and it’s happy and sarcastic and funny and just makes you feel warm and tingly inside. This class should be great but now I need to read for US gov and eventually sleep so no further insight will be shared.

The Most Immature Thing Ever!

In case you were wondering, the most immature thing you can do… basically ever has got to be defriending someone on Facebook because you’re mad at them or breaking up with them, especially if you refriend them again and then defriend them again, then refriend them AGAIN and then BLOCK THEM!

Who the fuck does that?

I could tell you, but I won’t… at least not today… well, probs not ever… but if you know me then you know who.

And you know what? Good for me!

After a weeking of advising and shameless partying, I find myself back in the throws of an absurdly difficult curriculum/ work schedule. How was I supposed to know that I would be spending 10 hours a week in the fucking Daily Northwestern office?? This totally blows. I can only hope it will all be worth it.

Whatever.

I have the most absurd love/hate relationship with Northwestern, but honestly, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. And I have finally caught up with all the people I didn’t meet last year! Hurray for NSW. And hurray for the adorable freshmen that have graced this campus this year. Thumbs down to the sloppy drunken idiots though.

Anywho, here’s to a new year of wonder and fabulousity!

Tobey Maguire was spotted departing the Ritz by Central Park with his posse. The young star, most recently known for his cameo in Tropic Thunder and his run ins with the paprazzi, waved a cheerful goodbye to his elevator mates as he walked off clad in baby blue for a walk down 5th Ave.Guess everything’s better when you don’t have 50 paprazzi harrassing you. Have fun Tobey, there no place like Manhattan!

I Hate Hurricanes

They always suck and there is nothing we can do about it. I usually hope hurricanes hit me just so that they don’t hit Cuba, Haiti, Mexico or New Orleans again. It’s really the shittiest fucking thing ever.

And it’s not like we can say “yo hurricane! sit your motherfuckin ass down and chill the fuck out!we are tired of your bullshit! go the fuck home… bitch!!” because the son of a bitch is still gonna keep on twirling around fucking the shit out of everyone.

Now for a coherent thought. Last night I was watching the news and seeing how hurricane Ike has devastated Haiti and is currently wreaking havoc on my motherland. And I want to slowly torture something whenever I think that the Castros and their entouage are chillin in their mansions while their people are struggling just to survive. I mean, it’s basicaly the same story when there are no hurricanes, but it’s even worse when villiages are being torn apart and historic building I may never get to see are being destroyed.

It just makes you realize how shitty the world can be.

Fuck you, Mother Nature!

Person of the Week- Russell Brand

Oh Russell, what a stir you have caused you naughty, naughty Brit!

Russell Brand, host of MTV’s 2008 VMAs, British comedian and former drug/sex addict, was relatively unknown in the US, until his scandalous performance last night.

At the 25th Annual VMAs, Brand made a few less than friendly jokes about Bush, Palin’s daughter and The Jonas Brothers. While some appreciated Brand audacious jabs, others were mortified to say the least.

But ya gotta admit he’s got pizazz!

He first made fun of his own lack of fame in the US and quickly moved on to a plea for Americans to elect Barack Obama “on behalf of the world” claiming that America is progressive enough to elect a black president because “otherwise why would you let that retaded cowboy fella be president for eight years? We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because in England he wouldn’t be trusted with a pair of scissors.”

He then moved on to make fun of that “poor teenage father boy” who will “never have sex again.” He was reffering to little Palin’s lover, concluding that his misfortune? makes pledging to remain chaste til marriage sound like the “greatest idea ever.” Enter The Jonas Brothers.

“The 2008 VMAs were poised to mark the return of Britney Spears. Instead, they will go down in history as the night when that English guy from “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” almost made the Jonas Brothers cry,” according to the LA Times.

While The Chicago Tribune was a tad more ambiguous and The New York Times was far more appreciative of Brand’s humor, I want to know how the Jonas Brothers feel about all this? Did they laugh it off or are they as pisses as Jordin Sparks who used her stage time to defend the ever popular purity rings?

One of the highlights of the night was when Brand called Britney “the female Christ” and talked about happiness and philosophy with some hot little number as the credits rolled.

And what do I think? Well, if you haven’t guessed it by now, I love Russell and while I admit his humor was, shall we say, severe, it’s all apart of the act and everyone needs to calm down. And with Britney’s comeback being less than dazzling (sure she snagged 3 awards, but all she did was act like an empty little robot) something needed to grab our attention.

Verdict: I hope Russell doesn’t get black listed :/.

God Bless America? God Save Everyone Else!

Since when is it part of America’s job to murder 90 Afghan civilians?

…including approximately 75 women and children?

There are, as we know, three sides to the truth… “mine, yours and how it went.” American troops claimed that villagers were spreading Taliban propaganda and were attacked when they entered the village, but all the interviewed survivors claimed to oppose the Taliban.

I’m not going to get into the what’s what of this because it’s not even important. What is important is that America is not the world’s police. While I hate to rag on our troops abroad, there is no justification for ruthless murder. Where are our morals? Where are the ideals and values Americans claim to hold so dear to their hearts? Where has our virtue gone?

The Afghans affected by this tragedy are puzzled by the soldiers’ actions and want the troops brought to trial (a chance the dead civilians never had). All they want is the justice that was denied to their dead wives and children and damnit, they deserve it. There has been too much death and destruction and as every year passes the light at the end of the tunnel becomes dimmer and dimmer.

Can America still be called the land of the free? The home of the brave? It seems we are becoming prisoners of our own destruction!

We are in desperate need of change and the nearly senile McCain is not going to give us that.

We need new ideas, new blood, new policies, and a new hope.

We need Barack Obama.
