Song of the Week- Treat Me Like Your Mother by The Dead Weather

So, I meant to post this last week after I saw this concert, but that is life.

Anyways, Jack White’s newest creative endeavour is everything we could hope for and more. The dynamic quartet lit up the stage in shades of black and blue. Composed of Jack Lawrence of The Ranconteurs, Dean Fertita, the power guitarist for Queens of the Stone Age, Alison Mosshart, the killer front woman of The Kills and, of course, Jack White, himself.

Throughout the show, Alison commanded the stage with her scary sex appeal, while White rocked the drums until his mind blowing guitar solo. And while each member of the group has their own greatness, the way they move and play together is what really give The Dead Weather the edge we’ve been looking for.

And once the much anticipated encore arrived, “Treat Me Like You Mother” blasted through the speakers and quite literally shook everyone to pieces.

I’m not very coherent right now am I? It’s only 11PM and I’m really tired so I’ll just let this one go and leave you with the video and pictures.

Here’s some sugar for your tongue ;)

So you know that Trick Daddy and Ludacris song “Sugar on my Tongue”?

Well while listening to a Genius playlist on iTunes (inspired by “I Want Some More” by Dan Auerbach) I discovered this is, in fact, a remake of “Sugar on my Tongue” by Talking Heads!

(I couldn’t find just the song so here it is with some dancing lady.)

So that was quite exciting… Goodnight!

Heckler @ Flaming Lips @ Pitchfork + Recap

How could I have forgotten to post this? This dude was ridiculous!

During The Flaming Lips’ set at Pitchfork Music Festival last Sunday, some d-bag help his middle fingers in the air and kept yelling about how shitty The Flaming Lips are.

FLDBAfter some intense FL love from the croud, and almost fist fight and a lingering cheeriness from the sound and sight of a great set, Shmucky McGee left… dignity not quite intact.

FLDB2The back right of the crowd rejoiced as we were freed from the tyranny of the party pooper and resumed our festivities with a “Yoshimi” sing-a-long, lots of talking by messianic front man Wayne Coyne, and a well recieved finale of “Do You Realize?”

IMG00100We were far since Grizzly Bear’s set was right before on another stage but it was still hella fun and, accoding to Kliph, the band had fun, too.

So, back to the beginning.

Saturday was sick. First, we checked out the posters and screen prints which were amazing. B.Mac met his inspiration, Jason Munn of The Small Stakes and got a great Battles poster, while I made away with a Dr. Strangelove inspired Cold War Kids poster by _____. Then, we checked out a great set by Yeasayer that started out with a hysterical sound check (Bristol Palin, check), continued with a light shower that really riled up the crowd (including one dude who beckoned God to bring back the rain) and ended with my favorite tune, “Sunrise” during which the friggin’ sun came out! It was magic. The day ended with a high energy set by The National where violinist Padma Newsome ripped up his solos and front man Matt Berninger belted out his lyrics with such intensity, his fell down (on purpose?) towards the end of the set. With crowd pleasing renditions of “Mistaken for Strangers,” “Squalor Victoria,” “All the Wine,” and “Fake Empire,” the concluded the show with an epic “Mr. November” where Matt ran of stage and stood on a trash can, later explaining to the crowd that it didn’t turn out as cool as he thought it would. What a charmer.

On Sunday, Blitzen Trapper played a good set, after which there was some more poster shopping (I got a beautiful M.Ward print and B.Mac got the official Pitchfork Grizzly Bear poster). Then, a great set by The Walkmen which was higly complimented by @Edward Droste, after which he and the rest of Grizzly Bear took the stage. The most anticipated set of the weekend, they did not disappoint and delivered a crazy awesome performance! Opening with “Southern Point,” they kept the momentum and navigated their way through a perfect set list including every one of my favorite songs. Regardless of a few technical difficulties (“This is the part where the stage hums and we all meditate”), they played stellar renditions of “Two Weeks,” “The Knife,” “On a Neck, On a Spit,” “Cheerleader,” and the always incredible “Ready, Able.” Plus, Droste is great with audience interaction; he’s a performance gem!

Overall, a great weekend. Can’t wait to immerse myself in hipster land again next year!

City Slickin’

Walking through downtown Chicago during my lunch break was awesome as I was on my way to pick up my food. Without a care in the world and completely engrossed by my newest musical obsession (Atlas by Battles, brought to me by B.Mac), I wandered through a mass of people, skyscrapers and the symphonic battle playing in my head.

But, alas, the rest of my trip would not continue to be as pleasant.

Once the 7+ minute song ended and I picked up my delicious dumplings and pad thai, I began to pay a little more attention to my surroundings. There were so many sad looking homeless people around it brok my heart. There’s such an apathetic attitude towards the homeless and while, I don’t think I’m any sort of exception, I wish I knew a way to help. It just really sucks because sometimes people aren’t lazy assholes, they’re dealt a bad hand and have no choice but to fold. And while some people persevere and have these wonderfully inspiring stories, not everyone can make it and it sucks.

On to something slightly less depressing (but only slightly), as I innocently walked past a bus stop, this dude blatantly stared at my chest, as in, literally ogling in front of my face. Do people really have no shame? I mean sneaking a peak or checking someone out is one thing, but like Trojan’s new slogan beckons, let’s EVOLVE. Come on!
Finally, the icing on the cake was passing through Pigeon Town where every pigeon in Chicago must go to hang out. I hate pigeons.

Big tall city…. What’s next?

Song of the ?- Rollercoaster by M. Ward

In preparation for the concert I will be attending next month, I listen to M. Ward for about 3 hours today and this song just sprang out at me.

It’s such a perfect song about life. It can have so many interpretations and apply to so many things.
The roller coaster can be as complex as a relationship or life, but it can also be as simple as the literal amusement park ride. The guitar, too, is just so charming and it just casually plucks through with ease while the cheery piano picks up and drops off as we weave in and out of the chorus. A perfect 10; can’t wait to see it live!

Song of the Week- Mistaken for Strangers- The National

Definitely the best tracks off Boxer, “Mistaken for Strangers” will blow your mind with it’s sick backbeat and unique blend of sound. You can barely tell anything apart it all works together so well. Add the fairly mellow vocals to contrast and you get the darkly upbeat masterpiece that crowns this album.
Not only is “Mistaken for Strangers” an amazing song by an amazing band, but the message behind it—or rather the message I am choosing to construe from it—is something I am certain many Northwestern citizens can relate to.
Have you ever been walking down Sheridan Road and seen someone you know? Of course. Have you ever stopped to say hello and chat with your friends. I’m sure you have. Have you ever been in a hurry and merely smiled, waved or nodded. Yes.
Now riddle me this: have you ever seen someone you are certain you met and spoke to at some point in your life, someone you’ve hooked up with, even, attempted a smile or nod of acknowledgement and been completely ignored? If you said no, you are a liar because if you go to Northwestern I am willing to bet you have experienced this wonderfully awkwardish situation.
So here’s where the chorus rings true to NU life: “You get mistaken for strangers by your own friends, when you pass them at night under the silvery, silvery Citibank lights.” And while the lights may not be silvery and they may not originate from Citibank, you get the point. Someone could probably make a music video for this song by putting hidden cameras around campus and editing it all into 3:32 minutes.

“You wouldn’t want an angel watching over,” because it’s embarrassing when that happens. “Surprise, surprise, they wouldn’t want to watch” because it’s just painful for everyone who witnesses it. I don’t really know what our campus population deal is with that. Everyone should just be really friendly and say hi to people even if you’re not sure you know them.
For instance, last week I think I may have smiled and waved to around five people I don’t think I’ve actually met because they look like combinations of people I know and in that split second when I’m thinking “to wave or not to wave” I always just go with the wave. At the end of the day I’d rather be too friendly than not. So maybe now you’ll get mistaken for friends by your own strangers… or something like that.

I thought of another song to supplement the song of the week but I just can’t remember… long live college… I know I won’t after what I’ve been doing to myself… good night?

Song of the Week- Hang Me Up to Dry by Cold War Kids

So as to stop The Keg influence I decided to pick the song of the week before any night time festivities and make it a legitimately good song.

After marvelling at their latest masterpiece, I went back to the basics and happened upon a delectable favorite. Every element of “Hang Me Up to Dry” is magnificently done and stands together briliantly. From the varying tone of the vocals to the steady bass to the chaotic piano its another one of those encumbering songs you just get lost in. The fabulous lyrics are easy to relate to as well and as I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned before I’m kind of a sucker for well done metaphors. Enjoy the magic!

Why can’t I get this song from iTunes????? or Rhapsody????

“She’s So Lovely” by Scouting for Girls is such a good song and I really want it so I can illegally skip down the streets of Evanston listening to it. I would understand if it just hasn’t made its way to the US yet but both iTunes and Rhapsody have the karaoke version of it. WTF? How can you have the karaoke version of a song you don’t have. That’s just silly… and annoying. For now I will have to be content with posting it here and then once iTunes gets a copy we can all go get it… because I’m a ninja not a pirate and I don’t download music illegaly.

Music I’m looking forward to

Got out of the Daily early and had a chance to look through my new Rolling Stone and there was a fall music preview full of many albums I hope to own very soon. What am I the most exited about?

5.Snow Patrol- A Hundred Million Suns

Release date: 10/28

Here’s the first single, “Take Back the City.” There’s cool cosmic imagery in it and I think this album is veryyyy promising.

4.Oasis- Dig Out Your Soul

Release date: 10/7

This is “Falling Down.” I’m so psyched for this! It’s been three years since we’ve had a new Oasis album so this should be quite stellar! Oasis has one of those sounds that you get lost in. In case you can’t tell, I live for that shit!

3. Kaiser Chiefs- Off With Their Heads

Release date: 10/28

This is the new single “Never Miss a Beat.” I think it could be one of their best singles yet although I really do love “Modern Way.” Anywho, if this song is anything to go by, this album should be siiiick!

2. Fall Out Boy- Folie a Deux

Release date: 11/4

“I Don’t Care” is already a huge song and the video is awesome. Fall Out Boy has this adorable way of making fun of themselves and everyone else in the process. And they definitely are the most underrated overrated band right now. Look out for Sarah Palin in the video!

1. The Killers- Day & Age

Release date: 11/25

I absolutely adore The Killers. Their Sam’s Town tour is definitely one of the best concerts I’ve been to second to maybe The Red Hot Chili Peppers (and The Roling Stones, but I was 9 so I don’t remember it that well). Anywho this is the first half of the first single, “Human.” If this album tops Sam’s Town, it should be like a musical orgasm.

It should be one hell of a fall. Look out for album reviews shortly after release dates!

Also, I’m goign to see The Kooks in two weeks so there should be a nice review after that!!
